How Your Heater-Cooler Device May Be Ejecting NTM into the OR

As indicated in this recently published FDA Executive Summary, NTM (nontuberculous mycobacteria) has been detected in patients who were treated using a heater-cooler device for cardio-pulmonary by-pass. Even though the FDA found that the incidents were primarily related to units supplied by one particular manufacturer, the possibility exists that mycobacterium chimaera could be present in other units.
